James Morosini to Direct New Horror Film for Lionsgate

Acclaimed actor/director, James Morosini will be helming a new horror movie for Lionsgate called Mommy’s Home.

When James Morosini directed (and co-starred in) the funny and moving South by Southwest Film Festival fave, I Love My Dad, Hollywood took notice. The film has helped launch him into a deal to direct a unique upcoming horror picture titled, Mommy’s Home. This forthcoming horror movie revolves around a mom who is “cryogenically” preserved for years until she is finally thawed out after the passage of time. When she is unfrozen, she becomes involved in a twisted plot as her son realizes the consequences of messing with the progression of natural life.

Mommy’s Home is expected to be a psychological thriller although it is, at its core, also what it will most likely be marketed as- an offbeat horror picture. Morosini can most likely bring that odd sense of unique quirkiness to the film which could help make it even more terrifying than it appears to be on the surface.

Morosini proved he knew how to do comedy with 2022’s I Love My Dad which also had suspenseful elements interwoven within its comic moments. It was a great movie where Patton Oswalt’s dad character tried to set his son (played by Morosini) up with a sweet girl. One problem: The father hardly knows the girl and pieced together stolen pictures of her from her Facebook page to send to his son. While the dad pretends to be the girl for a while, all hell eventually breaks loose as Oswalt’s character’s son sets out to meet the fake girl of his dreams with moving and disturbing results.

Coming soon for Morosini fans will be the unveiling of his role in It’s What’s Inside, a movie Netflix acquired at Sundance for $17 million. As an actor, Morosini has proved he is more than capable of bringing complex characters to life, judging from his superb work in I Love My Dad.

Lionsgate is known for profitable horror movies. One of their more recent scarefests was called Imaginary. It was about a teddy bear from hell. The movie earned a whopping $39 million worldwide on a small budget. Mommy’s Home is expected to have a conservative budget to enhance the film’s overall profits.

James Morosini has a creative edge that manifested itself through his presentation of the characters in I Love My Dad. With Mommy’s Home, it seems like there will a lot of complicated themes present as well. If Morosini can pull this one off successfully, the only question remaining will be: What can’t this great director do?
