Filmmaker Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Nine”) has reportedly become the latest to sign on for the long-gestating remake of Tony award-winning stage musical “Guys and Dolls” at Sony’s TriStar Pictures label reports The InSneider.

Marshall would replace previously attached Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”). Marshall directed and Condon wrote the “Chicago” film adaptation in 2002.

That film’s producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were also first attached to a new “Guys and Dolls” adaptation over twenty years ago just after “Chicago” hit big. TriStar picked up the rights to the property in 2019.

Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were linked to a version at 20th Century Fox at one point, while Vin Diesel has expressed a strong desire to star in the film.

Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine starred in a previous 1950s film version which was adapted and helmed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

The musical first premiered on Broadway in 1950 where it ran for three years and captured five Tony Awards, including the best musical prize along with famed songs like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat”.
