The Highlights of the Legendary James Earl Jones in Retrospect
James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 93, leaving behind a career in which he voiced a couple of the biggest characters of all-time among other notable accomplishments.
It is sad to report the passing of James Earl Jones who was a talent larger than life. He did the voices of both Darth Vader and Mufasa in Star Wars and The Lion King movies. He had a very distinct and very memorable, commanding voice that followed him his entire career.
Who can forget when Darth Vader told Luke Skywalker that he was his father in The Empire Strikes Back? Jones was initially not credited for the first two Star Wars films, according to Wikipedia. Eventually, Jones got the recognition he deserved for the role of Vader in later installments and re-releases of the pictures. Jones played the voice of Mufasa in both the 1994 The Lion King and the 2019 movie of the same name as well.
In 1989’s Field of Dreams, Jones portrayed a writer named Terence Mann. Kevin Costner starred with him in that picture and Costner spoke out about Jones’ passing. Costner cited Jones’ “booming voice” and his “quiet strength.” This movie featured one of Jones’ most praised supporting roles. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. In it, Costner’s character seeks out Mann for some sage advice regarding the fact that Costner’s character has built a baseball field in the cornfields in Iowa. Costner and Jones played off each other like two finely-tuned violins and this was one of the more gentle performances Jones is most remembered for.
A lighter role for Jones was in the Coming to America pictures with Eddie Murphy. Jones played the King of Zamunda in a hilarious role that the actor was beautifully suited to play. Perhaps, Jones will also be remembered for his tremendous versatility in terms of his ability to perform in blockbusters, comedies and dramas to equally successful effect.
In retrospect, Denzel Washington sums up the career of James Earl Jones the best, though. James Earl Jones was Washington’s hero and he says of Jones, ” He was who I wanted to be.” Who wouldn’t want to be a man as charismatic and as distinguished as the legendary James Earl Jones? Jones was an EGOT winner too. Even though his Oscar was an honorary one, it was honor that made this man the actor that he was. Jones was an artist of integrity who graced the screen in such a way that whether you saw him or heard him, you respected his very presence. That’s the definition of not only a great actor but a great man.
