Church Document Sunday: Mathilde Belair’s 1923 Burial Document | The Global Today

Mathilde Cloutier, second spouse of my paternal great-grandfather Pierre Belair, died 95 years in the past on 16 April 1923. [1]


Pierre’s first spouse, Angélina Meunier, died in July 1896, forsaking seven youngsters, together with my grandfather (Pépère) Fred, who was solely six years outdated.


A 12 months later, Pierre married Mathilde Cloutier, who was born and raised in Ste-Cécile-de-Masham, Pontiac County, Quebec, like Pierre and his household. That they had 5 youngsters: two sons and three daughters.


Mathilde’s burial file doesn’t point out the reason for loss of life (such information hardly ever did), however she was 62 years outdated at her loss of life. Her husband was current on the funeral on 18 April, together with their son Joseph, my grandfather’s eldest half-brother.


I don’t know what sort of relationship Fred had together with his stepmother. I want I had considered asking him when he was older after I obtained desirous about family tree.

Ce dix-huit avril mil neuf cent vingt-trois / je soussigné curé de cette paroisse ai / inhumé dans notre cimetière le / corps de Mathilde Cloutier, épouse / de Pierre Belair, de cette paroisse / et y décédée avant-hier âgée de / soixante ans. Etaient pré / sents Pierre Belair, Joseph Belair et autres mother and father et amis qui ne / revinrent pas après le service.

My English translation:

This 18 April nineteen hundred and twenty-three / I undersigned [parish priest] of this parish have / interred in our cemetery the / physique of Mathilde Cloutier, spouse of Pierre Belair, of this parish / and who died [the day] earlier than yesterday aged of / sixty years. Have been pre / despatched Pierre Belair, Joseph Belair and different family and associates who didn’t / return [to the church] after the [burial] service.
